The Major Scale (The Master Pattern)
If you memorize one thing in this entire book, make it this chapter. The Major Scale is the ruler against which everything else in Western music is measured.
11.1 The Formula

A scale is just a ladder of notes that sound good together. The Major Scale is built using a specific pattern of Whole Steps (W) and Half Steps (H).
The Golden Code: W — W — H — W — W — W — H
- W = Whole Step (Skip a key)
- H = Half Step (Next immediate key)
11.2 Building C Major
Let’s apply the code starting on the note C.
- Start: C
- Whole Step up: D
- Whole Step up: E
- Half Step up: F (No black key between E and F)
- Whole Step up: G
- Whole Step up: A
- Whole Step up: B
- Half Step up: C (Home again!)
Result: C – D – E – F – G – A – B – C. (All white keys).
11.3 Building G Major
Now, let’s try starting on G. If we just played white keys, it wouldn’t sound right. We must follow the code.
- Start: G
- W: A
- W: B
- H: C (Correct so far)
- W: D
- W: E
- W: If we go a Whole Step from E, we land on F# (Black key).
- H: From F# to G.
Result: The key of G Major has one sharp: F#.
